Tar Heels Fall To Virginia 4-0 In Game One
April 13, 2018 | Baseball
Charlottesville, Va. – No. 12 North Carolina dropped game one to Virginia Friday night, 4-0, after going 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position while stranding seven Tar Heels on base. Sophomore Tyler Baum picked up the loss on the mound for Carolina as he moves to 3-1 on the season, making it his first career loss after starting 10-0 over the last season and a half.
Virginia struck first in game one in Charlottesville with two runs in the bottom of the first and tacked on another run in the third inning. A pair of doubles from Caleb Knight and Cameron Comer, combined with a wild pitch from Tyler Baum, produced the Cavaliers first two runs in the first inning. In the third, a one-out triple by Nate Eikhoff was followed with a single from Alex Tappen for the early 3-0 lead.
Virginia would add to their lead in the sixth inning with another run to make it 4-0, as that is all the Cavaliers would need as the Tar Heels get shut out for the third time this season.
At the plate, Kyle Datres extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games while Ike Freeman continues his ACC success, going two for four to increase his team-leading ACC average to .345.
Games two and three of the series will both take place tomorrow due to weather concerns. Game two will take place at 1 p.m. and game three will take place 40 minutes after the conclusion of the game at 1 p.m.
