#24 Tar Heels Move Into First With Second Round Rally
April 7, 2018 | Women's Golf
BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team moved from 10th to first in the second round of the Bryan National Collegiate Saturday by shooting 2-under-par 286 in the round. The Tar Heels currently sit at 11-over-par 587 with one shot over the field and one round remaining.
The 2-under-par round was the best by any team in either of the first two rounds played Friday. Through the first 18 holes, the Tar Heels were in 10th at 13-over par, and Michigan was leading the field at 3-over. However, thanks to the strong play from Kelly Whaley and Ava Bergner amidst blustery conditions at the Bryan Park Champions Course, the Tar Heels were able to climb all the way to the top of the field as other teams fell.
"The weather conditions were pretty tough all day long," head coach Jan Mann said. "And the afternoon was even windier. So, to play like they did in the afternoon was very impressive because the wind picked up tremendously."
Whaley, a junior from Farmington, Conn., and Bergner, a freshman from Ketsch, Germany, both shot 68s in the second round, the lowest scores of any players in the field to propel Carolina into first. For Whaley, it was the fourth time in the last five rounds that she has shot in the 60s and the fifth time out of the last seven rounds that she has shot under par. After shooting a 75 in round one, Whaley is currently in second and just two shots out of the lead.
"There is a calm about her on the golf course now that is really good to see," Mann said. "In the second round, she really got into her comfort zone and just went about her business."
Bergner has been in somewhat of a slump this spring. After finishing under par six times in the fall tournaments, Bergner had yet to break the barrier this spring. However, after posting a season-worst 83 in round one, Bergner's frustration powered her to a 4-under-par 68 over the second 18. She is currently in a tie for 38th at 7-over-par 151.
"In the second round, we really just focused on once she got her line, just committing to it," Mann said. "She started dropping some putts, she made several long ones and I think it gave her a boost of confidence. Then she took off from there."
Senior Bryana Nguyen (Columbia, Md.) shot a pair of 75s over the first two rounds and sits in a tie for 32nd at 6-over par 150. Sophomore Brynn Walker (St.David's, Pa.) shot an important 73 in round one and is currently in a tie for 43rd at 8-over after a 79 in round two. Sophomore Mariana Ocano (St. Petersburg, Fla.) is tied for 50th at 9-over par after shooting a 78 and 75.
Senior Cheni Xu (Zhuai, China) shot 9-over par and junior Clementina Rodriguez (Caracas, Venezuela) shot 19-over par competing as individuals.
Emily Migliaccio of Wake Forest leads all players at 3-under-par 141 after firing in a 71 and a 70 in the first two rounds.
ROUND 3: The final round of the Bryan National Collegiate is scheduled to resume at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, weather permitting. If the round is postponed, play will be rescheduled for Sunday. Carolina will tee off from holes 1-3 with No. 7 Furman and No. 22 Auburn in a shotgun start.
