No. 6 North Carolina Falls to UNCW On The Road, 4-2
May 15, 2018 | Baseball
Wilmington, N.C. – No. 6 North Carolina stranded 11 runners on Tuesday night as they fell to UNCW 4-2 at Brooks Field in their last road game of the 2018 regular season. Kyle Datres and Brandon Riley combined for four of the seven hits for the Tar Heels as Rodney Hutchison picked up the loss on the mound.
North Carolina and UNCW traded runs through the first four innings of the game at Brooks Field until the Seahawks took command in the fifth inning.
Trailing 2-1 heading in to the bottom of the fifth, UNCW strung together four hits to score three runs and take the 4-2 lead. With runners on the corners and no outs, Ryan Jeffers doubled to left field to clear the bases for the 3-2 lead. Caden O'Brien came on in relief of Rodney Hutchison and surrendered one more run before getting three big outs to limit the damage and keep the Tar Heels within striking distance.
Carolina would threaten with runners on the base paths in the seventh inning, but they couldn't get anything going as they dropped their second game to the Seahawks this season.
Brandon Riley continued his recent tear at the plate as he went 2 for 4 with a RBI to give him a new career high nine-game hitting streak while he tied his career high with a 18-game reached base streak.
Another Tar Heel set a new career high as Michael Busch reached base for the 23rd consecutive game, besting Ashton McGee's record of 22 he set last year for best on the team.
The Tar Heels will be back in action for the last ACC series of the year as they host Virginia Tech starting on Thursday at Boshamer Stadium.
