Tar Heels Wrap Up Successful Season In Sixth
June 3, 2018 | Men's Tennis
North Carolina was ranked No. 6 in the final ITA Men's Tennis national poll of the season, announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Additionally, senior Robert Kelly and sophomore William Blumberg finished the year with All-America honors.
Â
It marks the third year in a row and the fourth time in the past five years the Tar Heels have been ranked among the nation's top seven teams at the end of the season. They have been in the top 11 five years in a row. UNC was a program-best third last season, fifth in 2016, 11th in 2015 and seventh in 2014.
Â
Blumberg was ranked No. 2 in the final singles rankings, and he and Kelly were ranked No. 3 in doubles. Blumberg earned All-America honors in both singles and doubles for the second year in a row. Kelly earned doubles All-America honors for the third year in a row. He's just the fourth player in program history to earn All-America honors in three separate years.
Â
Freshman Benjamin Sigouin was No. 45 in the final singles rankings, and Kelly was No. 89.
Â
Kelly was the only senior on the roster this season for the Tar Heels, who finished 24-6 and reached the Round of 16 for the fifth year in a row. They played in the NCAA Tournament for the 23rd time in coach Sam Paul's 25 years as UNC's head.
Â
UNC swept the 2018 ACC player awards, with Blumberg named ACC Player of the Year and Sigouin named ACC Freshman of the Year.
