Carolina Releases 2018 Schedule
July 19, 2018 | Men's Soccer
CHAPEL HILLÂ - Coming off back-to-back College Cup appearances, the University of North Carolina men's soccer team's 2018 schedule will feature no fewer than seven teams that participated in the NCAA Championship last season. Included in that group is fellow College Cup participate and semifinal opponent Indiana as well as a NCAA second-round opponent UNCW.
The 2018 campaign will be a unique one in the long history of this championship program. The Tar Heels' home grounds of Fetzer Field is still under construction and is scheduled to reopen as a state-of-the-art facility later in the year, meaning for the second straight season Carolina will not play its home matches on campus in Chapel Hill.
Having to be a bit creative with finding appropriate facilities to hold "home" games in 2018, the Tar Heels will hold the majority of their home matches at WakeMed Soccer Park in nearby Cary, home to North Carolina FC, and Koskinen Stadium in Durham, home to Duke's soccer program. Carolina will play three home games at Koskinen Stadium while five others will be held at WakeMed.
UNC will open the season against East Tennessee State University on Friday, Aug. 24 at Bryan Park in Greensboro to kick off the Carolina Nike Classic. Two days later they will play in a rematch of the NCAA Championship semifinal against powerhouse Indiana at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., to conclude the annual tournament.
Â
After the Carolina Nike Classic, the Tar Heels will be on the road for eight games while being the home team for seven games split between Cary and Durham.
The remaining games in Cary include nonconference matches against UNCW (Oct. 2) and Winthrop (Oct. 16) while hosting ACC matches against Clemson (Sept. 28) and Virginia (Oct. 26).
Â
The Tar Heels will host two ACC matches at Koskinen Stadium in Durham against Pitt (Sept. 8) and Virginia Tech (Oct. 6) while also facing off against nonconference opponent Jacksonville (Sept. 3).
The four ACC away matches are Duke (Sept. 14), Notre Dame (Sept. 21), NC State (Oct. 12) and Boston College (Oct. 19). UNC will also play at Davidson (Sept. 11), at UNCG (Sept. 18) and at Old Dominion (Oc.t 9).
Exhibition matches will kick off the season against Coastal Carolina on Sunday, Aug. 12 in Conway, S.C. and conclude with Stetson on Friday, Aug. 17 at WakeMed and Presbyterian on Sunday, Aug. 19 at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C.
