Three Tar Heel Freshmen Named To U.S. U19 Training Team
August 12, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—Three incoming University of North Carolina freshmen women's lacrosse players earned spots on the 2019 United States Under-19 Women's Training Team, head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller announced on Sunday. Â
Tar Heel freshman midfielder Elizabeth Hillman (Fallston, Md.), goalie Kimber Hower (Sandy, Utah) and midfielder/defender Brooklyn Neumen (Rockford, Mich.) were among the 36 players selected to the training team for the 2019 U.S. Women's U19 National Team. The players were selected from the 110 players that participated in a three-day tryout that concluded on Sunday at US Lacrosse headquarters. Â
Hower and Neumen are both trendsetters as future Tar Heels.  Hower is the first UNC women's lacrosse player from Utah.  Neumen is the first UNC player from Michigan.  That duo will join Hillman when they enroll at UNC later this month.
"Obviously it's bittersweet because there's so much talent at this tryout.," said Amonte Hiller, the head coach at Northwestern University. "It's hard to let some of those kids go because there was such a depth of the talent pool — to have 500 kids apply and to just see how strong the drills and scrimmages and everything we did this weekend was.
"I'm really excited for the group that got selected. They really were dynamic. They were coachable. We were looking for players that could really work together and I think they distinguished themselves with those characteristics. We're really pleased to be able to invite them to be a part of this special experience."
The roster includes 12 attackers, 13 midfielders, eight defenders and three goals, features players from 11 different states, and spans four graduating classes.
The first training weekend for the team will be held Oct. 5-8 at the Team USA Fall Classic in conjunction with the U.S. Men's and Women's Senior Teams at US Lacrosse in Sparks, Md.
The 2019 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Women's U19 World Championship will be held Aug. 1-10, 2019 in Peterborough, Canada.
The United States has won four of the six previous FIL Women's U19 championships held (1999, 2003, 2007, 2011) while Australia (1995) and Canada (2015) have each won once.
