Tar Heels Finish Ninth in Weather-Shortened Cougar Classic
September 10, 2018 | Women's Golf
HANAHAN, S.C. – The North Carolina women's golf team finished ninth place at the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Club by shooting 4-over in what turned out to be a 36 hole tournament rather than the initially planned 54. Carolina climbed four spots on the leader board Monday thanks to under-par rounds from Kelly Whaley, Brynn Walker and Nicole Lu.
Â
Due to the approaching Hurricane Florence, host College of Charleston cancelled all home events for the remainder of the week, making Monday the final day of the tournament.
Â
After a slow start to the tournament carding a 6-over on Sunday, Whaley got things going Monday with a team-low 2-under par. She had four birdies during the round, and was nearly bogey-free with the only slip up being a double bogey on 12.
Â
Walker played another steady round with two birdies and one bogey to post a 1-under, 71. Her steady play led the weekend shooting a 1-under, 143 for the tournament.
Â
The duo of freshmen both made strong showings in their first collegiate tournament. Lu was impressive throughout the second round and provided the highlight of the day with her eagle on the 454-yard, par 5 18th. After beginning the day on the 10th hole, she birdied the ninth and final hole to get back under par for a -1 for the day. Overall, Lu shot a 3-over, 147 in her first collegiate tournament. Jennifer Zhou carded a 3-over for the day and a 36-hole total of 4-over, 148 in what was also her first collegiate tournament.
Â
Ava Bergner struggled to get going Monday and shot an 11-over, 83. She finished with a 11-over, 155 for the tournament.
Â
Florida and Vanderbilt ran away from the field with Florida taking home the tournament title by shooting a combined 30-under-par. Vanderbilt was close behind at 27-under-par.
Â
The newly renovated, par 72 6,261-yard Yeamans Hall Club proved to be challenging for most teams throughout the weekend, as only seven of the 19 participating teams finished under par.
Â
The Tar Heels will return to action Sept. 21-23 at the Mason Rudolph Championship, hosted by Vanderbilt University in Franklin, Tenn.
