Men's 4x400 and Tar Heels Shine In Bob Pollock Invitational
January 26, 2019 | Track & Field
CLEMSON, S.C. — Carolina's men's 4x400 relay led the Tar Heels in a strong second-day showing at the Bob Pollock Invitational in Clemson, S.C. on Saturday. Freshman Onyedikachi Ohia-Enyia and sophomores Ryan Saint-Germain, Jadon Johnson and Isaiah Palmer teamed up for a first-place finish and a time of 3:10.00 to wrap up the day. The young relay now holds the fastest time in the ACC and the 13th-best performance in the nation.
"I'm really excited," head coach Harlis Meaders said. "I think we took another step forward in producing a comprehensive team. A lot of PR's especially from the distance contingency. Overall, we had a really good meet in those events and some of the young sprinters stepped up to have exceptional days. I was really excited to see men's 4x400 pull off the victory and run a really fast early-season time."
Overall, Carolina broke 14 career records at the Rock Norman Track & Field Complex and qualified for three more ACC Indoor Championship events. On the opening day of competition, senior Morgan Ilse ran for a career-best 4:40.10 mile while junior Brianna Isles and graduate student Nick Golebiowski joined the list after their Saturday performances. Golebiowski, originally from St. Cloud, Minn., ran the men's 3,000 in a personal-best 8:15.58 and Isles (Lawrenceville, Ga.) jumped 40-3 1/2 (12.28 meters) for a career best and sixth place in the women's triple jump.
Sophomore Jill Shippee, a native of Clifton Park, N.Y., already held the third-best weight throw mark in Carolina history, but she set a new lifetime record with her runner-up throw of 64-5 3/4 (19.65 meters) at Bob Pollock. Shippee's new record mark ranks third all-time in the history of UNC track & field.
