GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina swept this week's Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey honors, with sophomore Erin Matson named ACC Offensive Player of the Week and junior Amanda Hendry named Defensive Player of the Week.
It's the fourth time Matson has won the award in the season's five weeks. For Hendry, it's the first ACC weekly honor of the season and the second of her career, following one her freshman year.
The Tar Heel teammates were honored following a weekend in which UNC earned two shutout wins on the road, winning 5-0 at No. 5 Virginia on Friday and 9-0 at James Madison on Sunday. UNC is now 9-0 on the season and 2-0 in ACC play.
Matson had five goals and two assists for 12 total points in the two wins. At Virginia on Friday, she assisted on the game-winner and on the third goal of the day, and then scored the fifth goal in a 5-0 win. At JMU on Sunday, she had four goals – her single-game high and her fourth multi-goal game of season –including the game-winner and her first made penalty stroke of the season.
Matson leads the nation in both goals (1.67) and points (4.33) per game and ranks second nationally in assists per contest (1.00).
Hendry started in goal for the two UNC shutouts. Facing 15 shots on Friday at Virginia, she recorded six saves – her most in a single game since her freshman season. UVA had 15 shots (one shy of UNC's total) and out-cornered the Tar Heels 9-4, but Hendry was rock solid in preserving the shutout.
On Sunday at JMU, Hendry turned back the Dukes' only two shots on goal as UNC secured its fourth shutout of the season.
Next up for the Tar Heels is an ACC matchup at home on Friday against Duke. Game time at Karen Shelton Stadium is 4:30 p.m.
