CHAPEL HILL - The North Carolina women's golf team is tied for fourth place after accumulating a team score of 4-under-par 284 in the first round of the 44th annual Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational at UNC Finley Golf Course. The Tar Heels were led by Nicole Lu's 3-under-par 69, which places her in a tie for second place.
Lu's first round performance marked a collegiate career best for the sophomore from Taipei, Taiwan. Her previous best collegiate round came in the first round of the 2019 Tar Heel Classic, in which she carded a 2-under-par 70.
Lu's round got off to a solid start as she recorded six straight pars before notching her first and only bogey on the 7th hole. However, she caught fire as she made the turn and knocked down four birdies in her final ten holes.
Following her teammates footsteps, sophomore Jennifer Zhou carded a 2-under-par 70 in the first round. Her front-nine was up-and-down with two birdies and two double-bogeys, however that all changed when she entered the back-nine. Zhou earned four birdies in her final nine holes to improve from 2-over-par to 2-under-par. She is currently in a tie for sixth.
Junior Ava Bergner is in a tie for 24th and scored an even-par 72, which featured four birdies and 11 pars.
Freshman Krista Junkkari and Kayla Smith both carded a 1-over-par 73 and are tied for 37th.
Additionally, the Tar Heels were represented through two individuals competing in the tournament. Freshman Aleks Golde shot a 3-over-par 73 and senior Mariana Ocano shot a 12-over-par 84.
The Wake Forest University Demon Deacons lead the tournament with a first round score of 6-under-par.
The second round of the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational will begin at 8:51 a.m. at UNC Finley Golf Course on Saturday.
