Carolina Drops Heartbreaker Against Virginia In Extra Time, 2-1

Charlottesville, Va. -- North Carolina (7-7-3, 3-5-0) dropped a heartbreaker on Friday night to No. 4 Virginia (14-1-1, 6-1-1) as the Cavaliers scored in the 100th minute to take the 2-1 win. After Virginia scored in the 5th minute to take a 1-0 lead, Raul Aguilera tied the game in the 78th minute before the game went in to golden-goal extra time where Andreas Ueland scored off a corner kick to give the Cavaliers the hard fought win.
The Cavaliers jumped out to the early lead in the 5th minute courtesy of a goal by Daryl Dike as his header beat Alec Smir to the near post. For the next 40 minutes,the Tar Heels and the Cavaliers traded possession and corner kicks in an evenly contested half where Virginia out shout the Heels 3-1 in shots on goal.
Carolina came out of halftime clicking on all cylinders as they took the pressure to Virginia from the opening whistle as they out shot the Cavaliers 9-2. Several early chances from Mauricio Pineda and Jack Skahan looked promising, but neither could cut in to the Virginia lead. That all changed in the in the 78th minute when Raul Aguilera scored his first goal of the season to tie the game, 1-1. Jeremy Kelly set up the goal by firing a shot on the Virginia keeper which was saved and pushed right in to Aguilera's path. The junior midfielder gathered the ball and skied it over the keeper and in to the top of the net to put the game on equal footing.
Over the last 12 minutes, both teams picked up the intensity as several yellow cards were shown and the game turned in to a track meet as teams went back and forth looking for the game-winner. Both teams had several chances, but neither could put the ball in the back of the net as we went in to extra time.
In the first extra time, UNC lead the Cavaliers 4-2 in shots on goal as they once again came out of kick off with a purpose. Aguilera and Jelani Pieters both thought had looks on goal that could have won the game, but Virginia's defense was up the challenge both times. In the 99th minute, Virginia had a corner kick that eventually bounced through the box and found Ueland at the back post. The Virginia forward slid and put the ball past Smir to to end the game.
