UNC Will Host NCAA 1st and 2nd Rounds
November 11, 2019 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – As the ACC Champion, the North Carolina field hockey team knew by Sunday afternoon it officially had a spot in the 2019 NCAA Tournament field via the Atlantic Coast Conference's automatic bid. Sunday night, while in the air between the Boston and Raleigh-Durham airports, the Tar Heels got details.
The 10 p.m. announcement revealed that UNC, the top seed in the field for the second year in a row, will host first and second-round games at Karen Shelton Stadium on Friday and Sunday. In Friday's first round, the Tar Heels will meet the winner of a Wednesday play-in game between Stanford and Miami (Ohio). That game is set for noon. At 2:30 p.m., Duke and Iowa will face off. The first-round winners play Sunday at 1 p.m. in a second-round game, the winner of which moves on to the NCAA semifinals the following weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Tar Heels (19-0) are making their 17th consecutive NCAA appearance and the 36th in program history. UNC has made more NCAA appearances than any other school.
"Nobody has an easy bracket," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We wouldn't expect our path to be easy, nor would we want it to be. We're just going to focus on our next game, against either Stanford or Miami. We hope we can take what we learned this weekend and apply it when we play on Friday."
