Isabel Cox's brace powers Tar Heels past Wolverines
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -Â Isabel Cox had the first two-goal game of her career and Alessia Russo and Emily Fox each recorded a pair of assists as the second-ranked University of North Carolina women's soccer team defeated 19th-ranked Michigan 4-0 Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Tournament third round before 3,672 fans at Dorrance Field.
Â
With the victory, Carolina improved to 22-1-1 on the season and has advanced to its 31st NCAA Tournament quarterfinal in the 38-year history of the championship. Carolina is 27-1-2 in its previous 30 NCAA quarterfinal appearances. Michigan saw its season end with a record of 17-6-1.
Â
UNC will host an NCAA quarterfinal game Friday versus Southern California at 6 p.m. at Dorrance Field.
Â
The Tar Heels opened the scoring against the Wolverines in just the sixth minute of play as Isabel Cox scored her fourth goal of the season off assists by Alessia Russo and Emily Fox. A through ball by Fox launched a counter attack and Russo served a brilliant ball to Cox in stride for a right-footed finish from inside the box about 16 yards out. The goal came at 5:56 of the game.
Â
Carolina added to its lead at 35:07 on the sixth goal of the season by defender Lotte Wubben-Moy. After striker Madison Schultz was taken down in the penalty box, Wubben-Moy sent the penalty kick attempt to the left side of the frame but goalkeeper Hillary Beall was there to parry it away. The rebound went to Wubben-Moy who trapped it with her right foot and sent the ensuing shot into the right side of the frame with her left foot. That goal gave the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead at intermission. It was Wubben-Moy's sixth goal of the season.
Â
UNC again struck in the early stages of the second half as Cox scored her second goal of the game and fifth of the season. Brianna Pinto won a ball in the midfield, volleying it on to Russo who headed her pass directly into the path of Cox who motored into the left side of the box, slotting her shot to the far post for a 3-0 lead at 50:01.
Â
Carolina finished the scoring at 66:24 on Zoe Redei's fourth goal of the season. Fox earned her second assist of the day, sending a ball to Alexis Strickland on the right wing. Strickland's cross expertly found the head of Redei in the right side of the penalty area and her header from in close went past Beall inside the near post.
Â
