
Six Tar Heels Earn All-South Region Honors

Six Tar Heel field hockey players have earned Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Region honors, announced Monday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Seniors Marissa Creatore and Yentl Leemans and sophomore Erin Matson were named to the All-South Region first team. Seniors Feline Guenther and Catherine Hayden and junior Amanda Hendry were named to the second team.

Division I teams are separated into five regions: Mid-Atlantic, Mideast, Northeast, South and West, with 16-member first and second teams for each region.

All six Tar Heels started for the 2019 squad that finished the season undefeated, beating Princeton 6-1 Sunday for the program's eighth NCAA Championship.

Creatore, a forward from Chapel Hill, started all 23 games and scored 16 goals with six assists. She was named ACC Tournament MVP earlier this month as the Tar Heels won their 22nd title.

Leemans, a midfielder from Breda, Netherlands, started all 22 games in which she played and earned ACC Defensive Player of the Year and All-NCAA Tournament honors. She finished the season with 14 assists, second on the team, and five goals.

Matson, a forward from Chadds Ford, Pa., played in 20 games and led the nation in scoring with 33 goals and 15 assists. She was named ACC Offensive Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament.

Guenther, a midfielder from Hamburg, Germany, scored five goals, beginning with two on Senior Day. She then added one in the ACC Tournament and two in the NCAA Tournament.

Hayden, a forward from Greenwich, Conn., started every game during her senior season and scored 13 goals. She also had three assists, two of them in the NCAA semifinals game. She was named second-team All-ACC.

Hendry, a goalkeeper from Wilton, Conn., completed her third season as the Tar Heels' starter with a goals-against average of 1.09. She was named to the All-NCAA Tournament team and to the All-ACC second team.

Next to be announced are the First Point USA/NFHCA Regional Player of the Year awards (December 5) — they will be followed by the Longstreth/NFHCA All-American Teams (December 10) and the First Point USA/NFHCA National Player of the Year (December 16).
