Sophomore Lilly Higgs set a new Bahamian national record as well as a UNC program mark in the 100-meter breaststroke to highlight the Tar Heel performances at the 2019 Toyota U.S. Open last week at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta. Higgs, who was born in Nassau, touched the wall in 1:09.52 in the 100 breast prelims to advance to the B final. She also won the C final in the 200 breast with a personal-best time of 2:31.23. Â
Emma Cole also hit a PR and made the U.S. Olympic Trials cut in the 100 butterfly. The Tar Heel junior touched in 1:00.43, just shy of the C final cutoff and 27th among the event's 134 entires.Â
On the men's side, junior Tyler Hill had a new personal best of 23.28 in the 50 free, just off the Trials cut of 23.19.
The Carolina swimmers will return to the pool on Jan. 11 at Koury Natatorium when the Tar Heels host Navy in a dual meet.
