Carolina aims for another deep NCAA Tournament run in 2020.
Another Challenging Schedule For Tar Heels In 2020
December 20, 2019 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL—University of North Carolina men's tennis head coach Sam Paul released his team's 2020 spring schedule on Friday, a slate that is once again one of the best in the nation.
Â
The Tar Heels return seven players from last year's NCAA semifinalist squad, a group that posted a 22-7 record and beat top-ranked Ohio State in the NCAA quarterfinals.
Â
"As usual, we will be facing a tremendously challenging out-of-conference schedule, as well as a very tough ACC schedule," head coach Sam Paul says. "Anytime you play in our league, you're going to be facing one of the top schedules in the country. Illinois, South Carolina, TCU and schools like Elon, Old Dominion and Georgia State at the ITA Kickoff—those are all talented, well-coached, NCAA Tournament-caliber teams."
Â
The 2020 schedule begins with a trip to the Crimson Tide Shootout on Jan. 11-12 and kicks off at home at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Jan. 17-18 against North Carolina Central and Wofford.Â
Â
Carolina will host Elon, Old Dominion and Georgia State in the ITA Kickoffs on Jan. 25-26 in Chapel Hill. The non-conference, home slate continues in the first two weekends of February against Illinois, South Carolina and TCU.Â
Â
The University of Wisconsin will host the 2020 Oracle ITA Division I National Men's Team Indoor Championship for the nation's top 16 teams on Feb. 14-17.
Â
The Atlantic Coast Conference schedule begins for the Tar Heels on March 1 at home against Virginia Tech. The ACC slate includes home matches against the Hokies, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Virginia, Wake Forest and Louisville and road dates at NC State, Miami, Florida State, Duke, Boston College and Notre Dame.
Â
The ACC will host the 2020 ACC Championships in Rome, Ga., on April 17-19.
Â
"We feel like this schedule will be a tremendous challenge for us and we're really excited about it," Paul says. "Losing an All-American and leader like Blaine Boyden, who was a tremendous player for us, those are big shoes to fill. The guys have worked hard and had a great fall. We're excited about 2020."
