Claudia Dickey records career high six saves for UNC
SAN JOSE, CALIF. – Top-ranked Stanford survived a strong challenge from second-ranked North Carolina in the 2019 NCAA championship game before 9,591 fans at Avaya Stadium. The two teams fought tooth and nail to a double overtime deadlock before the Cardinal prevailed 5-4 on penalty kicks.
Claudia Dickey made a career high six saves in the goal for the Tar Heels. It matched her career high of six she had against Florida State on October 24 of this season. Stanford outshot the Tar Heels 21-12 in the game and had a 14-3 edge in corner kicks in the match.
Stanford came out from the opening kickoff firing on all cylinders but the Tar Heels were able to weather the early storm from the favored Cardinal. Stanford had three corner kicks and four shots in the opening 6:25 of the match but it could not draw early blood. Claudia Dickey made her first save of the match on a shot by Sophia Smith with 6:25 expired.
For the remainder of the half, Stanford had two more shots and Carolina one with Stanford recording three corner kicks in the final 38:35 of the opening period. Bridgette Andrzejewski's shot at 23:46 resulted in a save by Stanford goalkeeper Katie Meyer. The best scoring chance for either team in the opening half came at 33:24 when Sophia Smith got alone in the box and had a point blank shot at Claudia Dickey from 12 yards. Dickey parried it over the end line for a corner kick to keep the game scoreless at 0-0 heading into the second half of play.
Stanford outshot the Tar Heels 12-5 in the second half and 18-6 overall in regulation time. Alessia Russo had a great chance to put the Tar Heels up at 53:14, taking a pass from Isabel Cox but pushing her shot just to the right of the goal. Stanford put on the pressure late in the half with Claudia Dickey making key saves on shots by Catarina Macario at 69:07 of the match and again with 13:59 left on the clock. Macario also had a shot from a dangerous area that she sent just wide of the left post with 8:55 to play in the second half.
Carolina outshot the Cardinal 3-0 in the opening overtime period. The second overtime period saw each team take three shots with the Cardinal taking all four corner kicks in the second overtime. Stanford appeared to have produced the game-winner with 2:28 left in the second overtime period but Claudia Dickey dove her to right side and deflected what appeared to be a game-winner by Carly Malatsky over the end line for a corner kick.
On the ensuing corner kick, Sophia Smith hit the cross bar with her shot and that proved to be the last good chance for either team.
The match went to penalty kicks where Stanford prevailed 5-4 Rachel Jones, Claudia Dickey, Alessia Russo and Lotte Wubben-Moy made their penalty kick attempts for Carolina while Dickey saved Stanford's fourth attempt. Stanford goalkeeper Katie Meyer made two saves in the penalty kick shootout.
Three Tar Heels - midfielder Morgan Goff and defenders Lotte Wubben-Moy and Julia Dorsey - were named to the All-Tournament Team.
