Carolina Leads Academic Team With Eight Honorees

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Eight members of the North Carolina field hockey team have followed their NCAA Championship season with All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic honors, as announced Friday by the league office. Marissa Creatore, Malin Evert, Morgan Goetz, Feline Guenther, Catherine Hayden, Ashley Hoffman, Erin Matson and Cassie Sumfest were named to the 41-member academic squad, giving UNC the highest total in the conference.
"Over the years I've seen that our best teams on the field are also the best academically, and that's true this year," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "It's important to all of us that Tar Heels perform at the highest levels athletically and in the classroom, and I'm proud to see us lead the league in players named to the All-ACC Academic Team."
Creatore, a junior forward from Chapel Hill, is majoring in psychology.
Evert, a senior midfielder from Bad Schwartau, Germany, is majoring in sociology.
Goetz, a senior defender from Cary, N.C., is majoring in biomedical engineering.
Guenther, a junior midfielder from Hamburg, Germany, is majoring in business administration.
Hayden, a junior forward from Greenwich, Conn., is majoring in media and journalism.
Hoffman, who graduated in December and is now playing for the U.S. National Team, majored in sociology.
Matson, a freshman forward from Chadds Ford, Pa., has not yet declared a major but plans to apply to UNC's business program.
Sumfest, a sophomore defender from Lewisburg, Pa., is majoring in business administration.
Ten players on the All-ACC Academic Team were named All-Americans this past season, while an all-time high 18 were voted All-ACC. For a look at the complete list, click here or see below.
Evert is one of four players on the list honored for the fourth year in a row. Hoffman is one of five players honored for the third time.
Boston College's Frederique Haverhals was honored as the ACC Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
