LAST TIME OUT
The Tar Heels split the weekend between three meets — Clemson's Tiger Paw Invitational, Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational and Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge — from Feb. 8-9 in hopes of advancing their ACC and national standings in numerous individual events.
For the third time this season, sophomore Jill Shippee bested her collegiate weight throw record and improved the No. 3 all-time mark in the Carolina record books after throwing 65-0 1/2 (19.82m) at Clemson's Tiger Paw Invitational. The Clifton Park, N.Y. native has appeared in the women's weight throw just four times and has improved her season-opening performance by nearly eight inches. Joining Shippee in Clemson, sophomore Peighton Simmons broke her indoor triple jump record to become Carolina's ACC qualifier with her mark of 40-10 1/4 (12.45m). Sophomore Emerson Porter also had a career day at the Tiger Paw Invitational, clearing a lifetime-best pole vault height of 13-0 3/4 (3.98m) to punch her ticket to the conference championships.
At Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational, all but one distance competitor clocked the best times of their careers in their respective events. Eight Tar Heels set personal records in the men's mile, men's 5,000 and women's 3,000 with three performers qualifying for the ACC Indoor Championships.
Graduate student Nick Golebiowski topped off the weekend for Carolina with a personal-best 5,000-meter performance, finishing 10th of 126 runners with an ACC qualifying time of 14:17.95. On Friday, redshirt-sophomore Mady Clahane ran a personal-best 3,000-meter time of 9:26.71 and junior Erin Edmundson clocked her fastest 800-meter time of the season (2:08.82) to qualify for ACC Indoors.
At Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn., the men's 4x400 lineup (Brandon Cachon, Ryan Saint-Germain, Jadon Johnson, Isaiah Palmer) ran the fastest time in the ACC of the week (3:09.68) at Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge and freshman Lauryn Hall finished the women's 60 prelims at the Music City Challenge with a season-best time of 7.63.
IN THE RANKINGS
North Carolina holds seven top-five times/marks in the ACC (including the No. 1 spots in the men's shot put and the men's 4x400) and 10 top-50 times/marks in NCAA Division I indoor competition.
