North Carolina Downs No. 17 Michigan, 4-2

CHAPEL HILL – Earning their third ranked win of the season, the Tar Heels topped No. 17 Michigan, 4-2, to wrap up the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Sunday afternoon at Anderson Stadium.

Following two scoreless innings, both the Tar Heels and Wolverines posted a pair of runs in the third. However, UNC tacked on one run in both the fifth and seventh innings to come away with the win. Clean fielding and solid pitching from Hannah George and Brittany Pickett kept Michigan at bay while a balanced offense put the Tar Heels ahead late in the game for the 4-2 win.

With the 3-1 weekend, North Carolina improved to 5-3 while Michigan falls to 4-5 on the season.

Key Moments vs. No. 17 Michigan
» Berlynne Delamora drew a walk in the second. Shayla Thompson entered as a pinch runner and stole second. An infield single by Hannah George put Tar Heels on the corners. However, Carolina's attempt to steal was unsuccessful as Michigan ended the inning.
» With two runners on, Berlynne Delamora connected with Campbell Hutcherson to end the second inning with a double play.
» In the third, Megan Dray drew a leadoff walk, bringing in Tainasha Vines to run. Kristina Burkhardt singled to center to put Carolina in scoring position. A Michigan miscue allowed a run to score before Leah Murray loaded the bases with a walk. Kiani Ramsey doubled the score with a one-run single for a 2-0 lead.
» As rain started to fall in the third, Carolina's edge was short-lived as Michigan's Katie Alexander launched a two-out, two-run gone-ball to left, evening up the game at 2-2.
» A leadoff walk and two batters hit-by-pitch, the bases were loaded with no outs for Berlynne Delamora. Â
» Carolina's 1-2-3 inning in the sixth, featuring a strikeout by Brittany Pickett, a lineout to Leah Murray and a diving grab by Kristina Burkhardt to hold off the Wolverines.
» With the bases loaded for the third time today, Hannah George sent a sac-fly to right, giving UNC a 4-2 lead.
