February 22, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Alle Sanford won the clinching match to lift No. 2 North Carolina women's tennis team to a 5-2 road win at No. 36 Boston College on Friday afternoon. The victory marked the 400th for head coach Brian Kalbas in 16 seasons with the Tar Heels.
North Carolina (12-1, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) continued its winning run in doubles play to earn the 1-0 lead over the Eagles. The 16th ranked duo of Alexa Graham and Jessie Aney won the deciding match on court one, 6-3, to keep UNC unbeaten in doubles in 15 straight matches going back to the 2018 season.
Per her usual rapid play, No. 5 Graham was first off in singles on court three with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jackie Urbinati. The Garden City, N.Y. native improves to 9-0 in dual matches and 20-3 overall in her junior season.
No. 27 Cameron Morra made it a 3-0 cushion for the Tar Heels after taking care of Natasha Irani, 6-3, 6-1, on court four. Morra is 7-1 thus far in dual matches early on in her freshman campaign.
Momentum changed in the match when Boston College answered with back-to-back three-set wins to get within 3-2 of the Heels. Kylie Wilcox won on court two over No. 6 Sara Daavettila, while No. 101 Yufei Long took down No. 2 Makenna Jones on court one.
With only four courts available at the Flynn Complex, singles five and six started later and ultimately would decide the match.
No. 122 Sanford made quick work of Laura Lopez, 6-3, 6-2, on court five to send Carolina to a win in its Atlantic Coast Conference opener.
Aney won 6-2, 6-2 over Elene Tsokilauri on court six.
UNC steps out of conference by visiting No. 27 Michigan on Sunday at noon in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Tar Heels jump back into league play at No. 23 NC State on Wednesday.
