Garrelick, Taylor Medal For UNC At ACC Championships

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – North Carolina brought home two medals in men's individual competition Sunday at the Atlantic Coast Conference Fencing Championships, with Matthew Garrelick taking silver in sabre and Joe Taylor bronze in epee. Action took place at Boston College's Conte Forum.

In the women's team competition on Sunday afternoon, the Tar Heels took third place. UNC also finished third in the men's team competition, which took place on Saturday.

Notre Dame swept both team championships and all six individual weapon titles.

In men's sabre, Garrelick made a run to the final before falling Notre Dame's Malcolm Fields in the final, 15-8. The silver medal marked a career best for the senior from Cedar Grove, N.J.

In epee, Taylor beat BC's Thomas Junseo Park in the third-place fence-off, 15-12, to earn bronze. In the semifinals, he faced off against eventual champion Dylan French of Notre Dame and almost pulled of an epic upset, falling 15-14.

Senior Connor Costa tied for eighth as the top Tar Heel men's foil finisher.

Garrelick joins junior Jackie Litynski in earning All-ACC honors, which go to the top two finishers in each weapon. UNC's Litynski placed second in women's sabre on Saturday.
