March 11, 2019 | Men's Basketball, Academics
CHAPEL HILL – University of North Carolina senior forward Luke Maye earned his second consecutive Academic All-America award today, the same day he was named to the second-team All-ACC for his play on the court.
Â
Maye was named to the Academic All-America second team. He is the fourth Tar Heel men's basketball player to earn Academic All-America honors in multiple seasons with Tom LaGarde (1975, 1976), Tyler Zeller (2011, 2012) and Marcus Paige (2014, 2015, 2016).
Â
Maye majors in business administration in the nationally-renowned Kenan-Flagler Business School.
Â
Last week, he won the Skip Prosser Award as the ACC's top scholar-athlete in men's basketball for the second time and became the fourth Tar Heel to earn Academic All-ACC honors four times (with Henrik Rödl, Zeller and Paige).
Â
Maye is second in the ACC this season in rebounding (10.5), ninth in free throw percentage (.780) and 15th in scoring (14.6). He is in the top 50 all-time in scoring by a Tar Heel (1,313 points) and is tied for 12th in UNC history with 890 rebounds.
Â
The Huntersville, N.C., native was the 2017 NCAA South Regional MVP, won a national championship that season, and was first-team All-ACC and third-team All-America in 2018.
Â
Maye's Tar Heels are 26-5 and earned a share of the ACC regular-season title with a 16-2 record in league play.
Â
Maye has played in 58 ACC wins (52 in the regular season and six in ACC Tournament play), one shy of the school record.
