Graham Clinches Win Over Miami
March 24, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL – The No. 1 North Carolina women's tennis team continued its unbeaten streak in conference play on Sunday morning thanks to a 4-3 victory against the University of Miami. It was the first outdoor match of the season at Cone-Kenfield Center.
In doubles play, Sara Daavettila and Cameron Morra took the first win on court three, 6-2. On the next court over, Makenna Jones and Alle Sanford came up short, losing 6-2. No. 8 duo Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham clinched the doubles point, 6-3, for the Tar Heels to remain undefeated in doubles play.
North Carolina (20-1, 8-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) started off slow in singles play but No. 9 Daavettila had a strong outing and picked up the first win on court three, 6-2, 6-1.
On court four, No. 25 Morra expanded North Carolina's lead to 3-1, winning 6-1, 6-3, after Aney dropped both sets on court five, 6-0, 6-4.
Just as it looked like the match was about to wrap up, Miami (11-5, 4-4) grabbed another win against Chloe Ouellet-Pizer on court six, 6-2, 6-2.
With courts one and two still in play, the atmosphere was intense. On court two, No. 3 Graham fought hard and showed why she is ranked in the top three in the nation in singles. After winning the first set 6-4, Graham found herself in a tiebreaker in the second set, but came out with the win, 7-6 (7) to give the Tar Heels the win.
No. 5 Jones competed hard, but could not pull out the victory on court one, falling short 6-3, 7-6 (7) to No. 2 Estela Perez-Somarriba.
The Tar Heels travel up north next weekend to face Syracuse on Friday at 4 p.m. and Pittsburgh Sunday at 11 a.m. The Heels will be back at Cone-Kenfield Center April 5th to take on Florida State.
