Tar Heels in Third After a Strong Second Round
March 30, 2019 | Women's Golf
BROWNS SUMMIT, NC – After a fantastic second round in the Bryan National Collegiate, the Tar Heels are seeking their best finish of the 2018-19 season.
Determined to build off of a strong first round performance, the Tar Heels recorded the second-best team score of the day with a 4-under-par 284, which places them in third. Junior Brynn Walker and freshman Jennifer Zhou led the way for the Tar Heels with excellent second round performances.
Walker began the second round of the Bryan National Collegiate in a tie for 7th, but finished in a tie for 4th. Her round started off with six-straight pars, which was followed by a bogey, a par and a birdie to close out the front-nine at even-par. Making the turn, Walker found her rhythm and strung together four birdies in the next seven holes. An unfortunate double-bogey on the par-4 17th saw Walker relinquish two shots. She would go on to finish with a 2-under-par 70.
Unlike Walker's consistent start, Zhou posted a double-bogey on her opening hole, however, she battled back to record her second lowest collegiate round to-date, a 2-under-par 70. Following her double-bogey, Zhou earned two birdies on the front-nine to get back to even-par. Then, much like Walker, Zhou took control and made two birdies on the back-nine. After two rounds, Zhou is in a tie for 8th.
Senior Kelly Whaley recorded an impressive 1-under-par 71. Her round was highlighted by four birdies, eleven pars and three bogeys. Following her strong round, she sits in a tie for 21st.
Sophomore Ava Bergner shot a 1-over-par 73 and is tied for 28th and freshman Nicole Lu scored a 5-over-par 77.
After an up-and-down day, junior Mariana Ocano, who is competing as an individual, recorded a 4-over-par 76.
The Wake Forest University Demon Deacons extended their lead from the first round and are currently at 20-under-par for the tournament.
The third and final round of the Bryan National Collegiate will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET on Sunday.
