March 6, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL - Senior Jessie Aney picked up the clinching point to give No. 1 North Carolina a 4-1 victory over No. 3 Duke on Wednesday afternoon inside Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
North Carolina (17-1, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) has won six of the last seven matches in the series against the Blue Devils, including a 4-0 win last month in the semifinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle.
No. 14 Sara Daavettila pushed Carolina in front for good, 2-1, with an impressive 6-4, 6-0, win over 19th ranked Meible Chi on court three singles.
No 20 Cameron Morra was victorious over Kaitlyn McCarthy on court four, 6-2, 7-5, to push the advantage to 3-1 Tar Heels.
Aney dropped her opening set against Margaryta Bilokin on court five, but was resilient in taking the final two sets to clinch the win. The Rochester, Minnesota, native has won the deciding point in both victories this season over the Blue Devils.
Duke (10-2, 3-1 ACC) picked up a point on court six by Ellyse Hamlin over Alle Sanford.
Carolina made quick work of the doubles portion of the match, winning by identical 6-2 scores on courts one and three. First off was No. 9 Aney and Alexa Graham over No. 24 McCarthy and Hamlin, and soon after, Daavettila and Sanford sealed the doubles win on court three over Kelly Chen and Hanna Zhao.
UNC heads to No. 25 Virginia on Friday, before returning to Chapel Hill to host Clemson on Sunday at 1 p.m.
