UNC Kicks Off Spring With Successful Morning At Carolina Cup
March 9, 2019 | Women's Rowing
The UNC rowing team opened spring racing Saturday at the Carolina Cup, competing against Atlantic Coast Conference rivals Duke and Clemson at Lake Hartwell. Despite concerns about the weather that moved up the racing schedule, rain held off and racing continued with just a slight head wind. Â
Â
"Today went very well for Carolina Rowing," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We were looking forward to the opportunity to race both Duke and Clemson to kick off the spring season and our team responded well to the race-day environment.
Â
"We have been working on staying focused on ourselves, executing our race plan well and attacking each piece and each stroke. It was great to see our boats go out and follow our race plan well."
Â
The action opened with the varsity eights. UNC placed third, less than a second behind Clemson in 6:57.32. The Tar Heel lineup for the V8 was Madeline Lavin (coxswain), Maria Marroquin, Kelly Williams, Bridget Tarnowski, Lauren Ferner, Amanda Perez, Paige Colpo, Katie Bell and Sally Stanley.
Â
In the 2V8, the Tar Heels were second to Duke in a time of 7:03.58, with Clemson third. The UNC lineup was Ashley Lim (coxswain), Sara Zetterberg, Elizabeth Farley, Alex Davis, Alessandra De Vito, Julianne Peters, Margaret High, Abby Hudspeth and Caleigh Sewell.
Â
Carolina also took second in the fours races, behind Duke and ahead of Clemson in both instances. UNC's first varsity four finished in 8:03.41, and the second varsity four crossed in 8:19.81.
Â
The UNC V4 lineup was Sofia Triana (coxswain), Melanie Hussey, Liz Finnessy, Katie McMahon and Hannah Fisher, while the 2V4 was Lara King (coxswain), Zoe Rose, Elizabeth Mitchell, Mackenzie Drake and Lindsay Miller.
Â
UNC and Duke then raced third and fourth varsity eights, with the Blue Devils taking the first two spots and Carolina finishing in 7:33.66 (3V8) and 7:54.01 (4V8) for third and fourth.
Â
The Tar Heel 3V8 was Sophia Perkins (coxswain), Samantha Kane, Olivia Curran, Hattie Doherty, Katie Characklis, Sarah Velarde, Caroline Young, Amelia Locklear and Kate Pierce.
Â
The UNC 4V8 was Chloe Todd (coxswain), Ali Worland, Ashton Brown, Maddie Smith, Sydney Tumey, Sarah Catherine Niles, Alexis Levister, Juliana Micchia and Gabrielle Labrozzi.
Â
The Tar Heels now go into a week of Spring Break training at Lake Lure, N.C. In addition to twice-a-day practices on the water, they'll scrimmage West Virginia on Thursday and Columbia on Friday.
Â
"As with every first race, we gained some insight as to who we are and how we respond to competition," Haney said. "This is a great set-up to leave this race and head straight to spring training so we can immediately get back to work. This team is special and can accomplish so much and so we are excited to start our spring season."
