UNC Drops Top-10 Matchup At Virginia

The UNC men's tennis team fell in a top-10 Atlantic Coast Conference battle at Virginia Friday, 4-2 on the indoor courts at Boar's Head Tennis Club. The fifth-ranked Cavaliers improved to 18-3 overall and 9-2 in ACC play, while the ninth-ranked Tar Heels fell to 16-5 (8-3).

Carolina has just one match remaining in the regular season, on Sunday at Louisville.

UNC took the first doubles match to finish, on Court 3, where sophomore Mac Kiger and junior Simon Soendergaard beat UVa's Gianni Ross and Aswin Lizen 6-3. The Cavaliers won the other two courts, however, to take a 1-0 lead into singles.

Tar Heels won the first two singles matches to put Carolina up 2-1. On Court 3, UNC freshman Brian Cernoch beat Henrik Wiersholm 7-5, 6-1 to tie the score at team 1-1. Senior Blaine Boyden then put UNC ahead with a 6-4, 6-2 win on Court 4.

But the Cavaliers won the next three matches, on Courts 1, 2 and 6. UVA's Carl Soderlund, ranked No. 5 nationally, beat UNC sophomore Benjamin Sigouin on Court 1, 6-0, 7-5.
The other three matches went to three sets. On Court 2, UNC junior Josh Peck bounced back to win his second set after falling in the first, but UVa's Brandon Nakashima won the third, 6-3.

The match was clinched on Court 6, where Kiger won the first set 6-4, but Lizen took the second 6-1. The third set went to a tiebreaker, which Lizen won 7-5 to give his team the win.
