All Tar Heel Boats Reach Grand Finals at Knecht Cup
April 13, 2019 | Women's Rowing
A three-week break didn't sidetrack the UNC rowing team, which saw all five boats advance to the grand finals during Saturday's heats at the Knecht Cup in Cherry Hill, N.J.
"it's been a few weeks since we raced so we were all pretty excited to get back out on the race course," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "The weather and water conditions were great today and we appreciated the opportunity to go down the race course with some fast competition with decent water conditions."
It's the third time this season UNC has raced on the Cooper River, following the Murphy Cup on March 23 and the Cooper River Sprints on March 24.
The varsity 8 was second in its heat in 6:40.89, the fourth-fastest time among the 15 V8 crews. That put UNC in the semifinal and the Tar Heels took third in 6:39.59 to advance to the grand final.
The second varsity 8 won its heat in 6:46.93, turning in the fastest time in the nine-boat field to move on to the final.
The third varsity 8 was second in its heat in 7:15.67, the third-fastest time among the seven crews.
The varsity 4 won its heat and had the fastest time among the 10 competing crews, finishing in 7:39.56.
The second varsity 4 was third in its heat in 8:13.43, but advanced to the grand final by having one of the two fastest times outside the top two.
The novice 4 won its heat in 7:58.95, the best time among the 16 competing teams.
Finals racing on the Cooper River starts at 7 a.m. Sunday, with UNC's first race the freshman/novice 4 grand final at 8:28 a.m. The varsity eight grand final wraps up the day and begins at 1:08 p.m.
