Four Swimmers Named To All-ACC Academic Team
May 1, 2019 | Swimming & Diving, Academics
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Four UNC swimmers have earned spots on the All-ACC Academic Team, announced Wednesday by the Atlantic Coast Conference. Brooke Bauer, Caroline Hauder, Sophie Lindner and Sterling Smith are among the 98 conference student-athletes honored.
Bauer is a junior from Louisville, Ky., and is majoring in neuroscience. A two-time honorable mention All-America, she was part of UNC's school-record 200 freestyle relay team in 2019.
Hauder, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., who has not yet declared a major, was also part of the record-setting relay team. She was an NCAA qualifier for the second-straight year and also honorable mention All-America recognition for the second year in a row. In 2018, Hauder earned All-ACC honors while setting the UNC record in the women's 100-yard breaststroke.
Lindner, a freshman from Matthews, N.C., is majoring in biology. She is a 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier in the women's 200-meter backstroke. She qualified for the 2019 NCAA Championships in the women's 200-yard backstroke.
Smith is a freshman from Silver Spring, Md., and plans to major in business. During the 2018-19 season he reached the ACC Championships A final in the 100-yard breaststroke and placed 8th overall. He already ranks fourth in school history in that event.
Mallory Comerford of Louisville and Andreas Vazaios of NC State, both NCAA Champions, were named the ACC Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
