The UNC men's tennis team has been honored as an All-Academic Team and rising seniors Josh Peck and Simon Soendergaard have been named All-Academic Scholar Athletes, recognizing outstanding achievement in the classroom during the 2018-19 school year.
Â
The Tar Heels, who advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the second time in the past three years, won the team award for posting a team grade point average above 3.2 for the 2018-19 academic year. UNC finished the season with a 22-7 record and was ranked No. 7 in the final ITA national poll.
Â
UNC was one of six Atlantic Coast Conference men's teams to qualify for the honor, joining Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech.
Â
The Scholar Athlete award, which is open to all varsity letterwinners, requires a GPA of at least 3.5 for the 2018-19 academic year.
Â
Peck, from Calgary, Alberta, is majoring in exercise and sport science and also earned All-ACC Academic recognition, which takes into account both athletic and academic achievement. He finished the year ranked 90th nationally in singles.
Â
Soendergaard, from Frederikssund, Denmark, is majoring in global studies.
Â
Both Tar Heels earned the honor for the first time.
