Five Tar Heels Open Quest To Defend Pan Am Gold

Five Tar Heels will open play at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, Monday, hoping to lead the U.S. Women's Field Hockey National Team to a third consecutive gold medal and an Olympic berth. Erin Matson, a rising sophomore at UNC, joins North Carolina graduates Ashley Hoffman, Lauren Moyer, Caitlin Van Sickle and Julia Young on the 16-player squad.
All of the Tar Heels are veteran members of the team. Van Sickle ranks second on the current squad in international games played with 138 caps and represented the U.S. at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Moyer has 63 caps, Hoffman 58, Matson 54 and Young 44.
The U.S. opens play Monday at 3 p.m. against Mexico. Continuing in Pool B competition, the U.S. will face Chile on Wednesday then take on host Peru on Friday. Crossover play starts Sunday and the event wraps up with finals on Aug. 9. For the complete schedule click here.
