After an exciting 2019 season, the WPLL announced the 2019 WPLL All-Star Team Tuesday, and former Tar Heel great Marie McCool and current UNC associate head coach Katrina Dowd were among those chosen. Selected by league staff and ILWomen's Women's Director Halley Quillinan Griggs, the 2019 WPLL All-Star Team features the top attackers, midfielders, defenders, and goalie in the league. The 13 player All-Star Team features seven players who are receiving their first WPLL All-Star honors, showing just how talented the league is across the board.
"This is such an exciting, innovative, talented team of All-Stars and the Who's Who of professional women's lacrosse," explained WPLL Commissioner Jen Adams. "The caliber of this years games was so incredibly high and the athletes representing our sport are truly the very best in the world. KATRINA DOWD, Fight, Northwestern 2010
Dowd brings an unprecedented level of flair, grit and creativity to the game whenever she touches the field. When the ball is in her stick everyone's eyes are set on her, as they know that something special is about to happen. Selected 12th overall in the WPLL's 2018 Fall Draft, Dowd made an instant impact on the WPLL. The Northwestern graduate and UNC Associate Head Coach finished the season with 13 goals (tied for second most in the league) and 18 points (tied for the most in the league). Of note, Dowd's 4G, 1A performance against the Brave on June 14 earned her Player of the Week honors.
MARIE McCOOL, Brave, UNC 2018
A returning All-Star from the 2018 season, Marie McCool continued to impress after a breakout rookie season. The 2018 WPLL Finals MVP picked up right where she left off in 2019, leading the league in goals (14) and draw controls (32). As the Brave's leading draw specialist McCool was equally capable of winning the draw herself or pushing the ball to the circle, where teammates Johansen and Arsenault won 46 combined draws. McCool's strongest performances came against the Command, where she tallied 4G, 1A, and 6DC, earning player of the match. She also tallied 2 goals and 9 draw controls in the WPLL Championship game, and collected 11 draw control wins in the semifinals, which is tied for the league record.Â
