Tar Heels and Wildcats Draw, 0-0
September 17, 2019 | Men's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL --- No. 11 North Carolina held Davidson to just one shot, but the Tar Heels couldn't find the back of the net against the Wildcats as the two sides finished with a 0-0 draw on Tuesday night.
Â
Carolina and Davidson traded possession early, but began relatively quiet for the first portion of the game. Fourteen minutes into the game, Mauricio Pineda put the first shot on goal from about 20 yards out, but it was saved by Davidson goalie Sawyer Gaffney.
Â
To close out the half, the Tar Heels had a pair of opportunities as time winded down. Shots from Raul Aguilera and Pineda found their way close to the net, but couldn't be punched in for the game's first goal. After a full 45 minutes, Carolina and Davidson were scoreless as the Tar Heels led the Wildcats 7-1 in total shots.
Â
Under two minutes into the second half, Pineda hit another beautiful strike, but it missed just high, bouncing off the crossbar for the closest opportunity of the game through 47 minutes.
Â
The Tar Heels got their best opportunity in regulation in the 86th minute. After a Pineda shot was deflected and set up a corner kick, Matt Constant attempted a promising header in the box that was saved by Gaffney, keeping the game scoreless. That ultimately sent the game to extra time.
Â
No shots were taken by either team in the first overtime period, forcing a second ten-minute extra period. With four seconds to go, Sebastian Berhalter fed a ball to Santiago Herrera off of a free kick that looked as though it was going to find the back of the net, but Gaffney came up again for Davidson, ending the threat and the game with a 0-0 score.
Â
Davidson had just one shot throughout the entirety of the game, coming in the 12th minute.
Â
The Tar Heels return to action Friday, Sept. 20, against Notre Dame in Chapel Hill.
