McArthur Resets Carolina Record Book at Virginia Tech Invitational

The University of North Carolina track & field program wrapped up the second and final day of the 2020 Virginia Tech Invitational on Saturday at Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va. The Tar Heels were led by a school-record performance from Daniel McArthur and another pair of field-event victories from the women's side.

McArthur, a senior from Mooresville, N.C., won the men's shot put, breaking his own school record from 2019 in the process. With his mark of 66-9.25 (20.35m), the 2019 ACC Indoor shot put champion now ranks second in the NCAA in the event. On the track, junior Isaiah Palmer (Plano, Texas) took first in the 400-meter dash, setting a new indoor personal record with his time of 47.15 seconds.

Anna Keefer, a junior from St. Michael Albertville, Minn., won the women's long jump with a season-best mark of 20-1.5 (6.13m). Her long jump win marks her second of back-to-back top finishes this season. Sydney Banks, a freshman from Woodbridge, Va., also came away with a field-event victory on day two of the Virginia Tech Invitational for the Tar Heel women. Banks cleared 5-8.75 (1.75m) in the high jump for her first collegiate win in just her second meet.

- Emily Malone, a sophomore from Missoula, Mont., set a new personal record in the women's shot put with a mark of 38-6.75 (11.75m).
- Madias Loper, a junior from Fayetteville, Ga., set a new personal record in the men's shot put with a mark of 57-0.75 (17.39m). On Friday Loper set a personal record in the weight throw with a mark of 56-4.75 (17.19m).
- Mitch Resor and Ian Moini set personal records in the men's mile. Resor, a senior from Charlotte, N.C., finished in 4:11.97, while Moini, a junior from Princeton, N.J., ran 4:13.83.
- Anna Keefer, a junior from St. Michael Albertville, Minn., matched her personal best time of 7.44 seconds in the women's 60-meter dash prelims.
- Ashley Smith and Camryn Petit set personal records in the women's 3,000 meters. Smith, a senior from Clemmons, N.C., finished with a time of 10:07.09, while Petit, a sophomore from Braselton, Ga., ran 10:10.34.
- Jake McEneaney and Ryan Combs set personal records in the men's 3,000 meters. McEneaney, a junior from Naperville, Ill., finished with a time of 8:35.27, while Combs, a sophomore from Chapel Hill, N.C., ran 8:50.03.
- Jill Shippee, a junior from Clifton Park, N.Y., won the women's weight throw while narrowly missing a season best with her mark of 64-5 (19.63m).
- Qhiyal Towns, a sophomore from Newport News, Va., matched his personal record in the 60 meters two times on Friday, finishing second in the event with a time of 6.81 seconds. That time is good for sixth in school history.
- Ari Cogdell and Brandon Cachon combined for second and fourth in the men's 500-meter run with times of 1:02.97 and 1:03.30, respectively.Â
Next Up: The Tar Heels travel back to Blacksburg, Va. for the 2020 Hokie Invitational from January 24-25.
