Carolina Opens Hokie Invite

Blacksburg, Va. - The University of North Carolina track & field returned to competition at the 2020 Hokie Invitational Friday at Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va. Day one of the two-day meet saw seven Tar Heels in action over four different events highlighted by a second-place finish by Jaren Holmes in the men's triple jump and a personal-record-matching performance by Emerson Porter.
Holmes, a freshman from Fredericksburg, Va., set a new personal record in the men's triple jump with a mark of 50-5.25 (15.37 meters). Friday's competition marks the first time Holmes has broken 15 meters as a collegian and moves him into the top 10 in the ACC as well as the top 50 nationally.
The sole Friday competitor for the Carolina women, Emerson Porter matched her indoor personal record in the women's pole vault with a season-best mark of 13-0.75 (3.98 meters). Porter, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., finished seventh in the event and ranks in the top five in the ACC and top 50 in the NCAA.
Competition is scheduled to resume Saturday at 12 p.m. with Sydney Banks competing in the women's high jump, the first of four Tar Heels in action on day two.
OTHER TAR HEEL COMPETITORS:
• Michael Spragley and Dalton McGlamery ran season-best times in the men's mile finishing in 4:19.29 and 4:24.59, respectively.
• Brandon Tubby, Alex Milligan and Jesse Hunt competed in the men's 1,000 meters. The trio finished fifth, seventh and 11th in the event with times of 2:24.99, 2:25.37 and 2:26.27, respectively.
