Six Tar Heels Receive Preseason All-America Honors From ILWomen
January 22, 2020 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL – Katie Hoeg, Taylor Moreno, Jamie Ortega and Emma Trenchard all grabbed spots on Inside Lacrosse's 2020 preseason first-team All-America team, the magazine announced on Tuesday.
Junior defender Kayla Wood and senior defender Catie Woodruff earned honorable mention All-America honors.
Hoeg, a senior, received second-team All-America honors in 2019 after dishing out a school-record 73 assists, breaking her own school record of 50, set in 2018. She enters the 2020 season as UNC's career assist leader with 132.
In her first full season as Carolina's starting goalkeeper, Moreno earned second-team All-America honors in 2019 after ranking fourth nationally in save percentage (.532) and eighth nationally in goals-against average (8.91). The redshirt junior registered double-digit saves in 11 games, including all three NCAA Tournament games.
A first-team All-America selection in 2019, Ortega set schools records for goals (81) and points (112). No Tar Heel had previously reached the 100-plateau, a feat Hoeg accomplished later in the season. With 151 goals and 198 points already to her credit, Ortega is on pace to shatter UNC career scoring records in 2020, just her third collegiate season. Abbey Friend holds the school record for career goals with 198. Corey Donohoe is Carolina's all-time points leader with 256.
One of the nation's best defenders, Trenchard was the 2019 ACC Defender of the Year and a first-team All-America selection. The junior, who earned a spot on the U.S. Women's National Training Team in the fall of 2018 under head coach Jenny Levy, has started all 42 of the Tar Heels' games the last two seasons.
The North Carolina women's lacrosse team opens the 2020 season against James Madison on Feb. 8 in Harrisonburg, Va.
