Tar Heels Will Host Two Key Home Matches This Weekend
January 30, 2020 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL—The University of North Carolina, ranked fourth in this week's Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Team rankings, will host two ranked opponents at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center this weekend.
The Tar Heels will welcome 19th-ranked Illinois on Saturday at 6 p.m. and No. 12 South Carolina on Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
The Illini feature two ranked singles players, including No. 11 Alex Brown and Zeke Clark, tied for No. 61 in the final Fall ITA individual rankings.
The Gamecock roster includes three ranked individuals (No. 21 Daniel Rodrigues, No. 39 Raphael Lambling and No,. 106 Connor Thomson) and two ranked doubles teams (No. 39 Lambling/Rodrigues and No. 56 Beau Pelletier and Thomas Brown).
To counter, the Tar Heels boast No. 82 Josh Peck and No. 7 Mac Kiger/Simon Soendergaard, as well as several top players who are unranked because they didn't play in fall tournaments.
Carolina is 4-0 this season with home wins over North Carolina Central and Wofford to start the season and victories over Elon and Georgia State last week in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Â
With the wins over Elon and Georgia State, UNC qualified for next month's ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Madison, Wisc.
The Tar Heels are at full strength after the recent returns to the lineup by junior Benjamin Sigouin, a 2019 All-America who missed some preseason action, and talented freshman Rinky Hijikata, who joined the team late after winning a qualifying match at the Australian Open in his native Australia. Both Sigouin and Hijikata saw their first action of 2020 for Carolina last weekend against Elon and Georgia State.
Free food will be available after the doubles point of each match for fans in attendance this weekend. Admission at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center is free.
