January 8, 2020 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL - The North Carolina women's tennis team begins the 2020 campaign No. 2 in the preseason Oracle/ITA Division I top-25 team rankings that were released Wednesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Carolina is tied for second with Georgia, but did receive three first-place votes compared to just one for the Bulldogs. Defending NCAA champion Stanford garners the top spot in the ranking, while UCLA and Duke complete the top five.
UNC heads up a group of seven Atlantic Coast Conference programs in the inaugural rankings of the new decade. Behind the Tar Heels and Blue Devils, the list includes NC State (8), Florida State (16), Virginia (20), Miami (23) and Wake Forest (24).
Vanderbilt (10) and Michigan (T14) are a pair of non-conference opponents that will visit Chapel Hill in early February to further bolster a competitive regular-season schedule for the Tar Heels.
Carolina, the four-time defending ACC Champions, begins its dual match season this Saturday with a doubleheader against Elon at 11 a.m. and Charleston Southern at 4 p.m from inside Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
