Late Goal By Matson Lifts Tar Heels Over Orange
October 16, 2020 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Junior Erin Matson scored on a fourth-quarter penalty corner to give the North Carolina field hockey team a 1-0 win over visiting Syracuse Friday evening at Karen Shelton Stadium. The Tar Heels improved to 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Syracuse fell to 1-3 (1-2).
"I'm delighted we got the win and the shutout," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "It was a hard-fought game by both teams – emotions were running high. It was a good defensive battle – we were finding it hard to get in the circle and get shots off and they were having the same trouble."
The score came in the 53rd minute of play, on the eighth of nine penalty corners the Tar Heels drew in the game. Senior Eva Smolenaars inserted to sophomore Romea Riccardo, who stopped the ball for Matson. Matson took it from the top of the circle, got around the first SU defender to reach her and then shot into the lower left corner of the cage for the gamewinner.
It marked the second game in a row the Tar Heels have scored the gamewinner in the fourth quarter. On Monday against Virginia, Matson assisted on the gamewinner by Meredith Sholder in the 52nd minute.
"I'm thrilled with Erin's execution on the penalty corner, to eliminate the first runner on the penalty corner and put the ball in the goal," Shelton said. "And hats off to our defense – the entire team played well and it was a great team effort. I thought both teams played really hard, and we grew up a little bit in this game."
The Tar Heels return to the Shelton Stadium turf on Sunday to host Duke for a noon game. It's the second meeting of the season between the two: they played the designated ACC match in Durham on Oct. 4, with UNC winning 4-0. Sunday's game will not count in the conference standings.
