Volleyball Wraps Up 2020 Against Virginia

CHAPEL HILL – Concluding the fall season, North Carolina welcomes Virginia for a pair of matches Saturday and Sunday in Carmichael Arena. The matches were rescheduled from mid-October due to COVID-19 and injury-related issues.
The Tar Heels (4-2, 4-2 ACC) and Cavaliers (1-5, 0-5 ACC) begin the weekend Saturday at 5 p.m. with the second match Sunday at 4 p.m. Fans can watch both contests on ACCNX. Carmichael Arena is not open to the public.
Last time vs. Virginia
Hitting a season-best .374, North Carolina swept Virginia on Oct. 20, 2019 in Memorial Gym for the Tar Heels first three-set win in conference play. The Tar Heels trailed by as many as seven in the first set, but were able to come back and complete the sweep of Virginia. Led by error-less matches from four Carolina attackers, the Tar Heels recorded their best match, offensively, since 2017.

Led by a balanced offense and a season-high of 13.5 total blocks, North Carolina earned its first sweep of the season, defeating the Wolfpack, 3-0, in the first match of the weekend.
Although NC State managed a lead in every set, the Tar Heels spread their attack to steady the offense for the sweep. Beginning the match in a 5-1 system, the Tar Heels balanced their offense between middle hitter Amanda Phegley with eight error-less kills and pins Carly Peck and Aziah Buckner each with seven. Middle blocker Kaya Merkler accounted for six of UNC's 13.5 blocks.
Picking up where the Tar Heels left off, A block by Amanda Phegley and Destiny Cox clinched North Carolina's four-set win over NC State on Sunday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C. to win both weekend matches.
Carolina posted nine of their 14.0 total blocks for a season-best in the final two sets en route to the 3-1 win.
Phegley led Carolina at the net with eight blocks while Kaya Merkler and Parker Austin tallied six and seven, respectively. Both Phegley and Austin tallied 11 kills while Parker also registered 11 digs for a double-double.

The 2020-21 season will resume in January with the NCAA Championship in April.
