Hendry, Matson Cap Season With Honors

After the UNC field hockey team finished the fall Sunday with an Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, two Tar Heels capped the season with Play Safe/NFHCA Division I National Player of the Week honors. Senior goalkeeper Amanda Hendry was named Defensive Player of the Week and junior forward Erin Matson earned Offensive Player of the Week honors.

The national honor, announced Wednesday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) is the third of the fall for Matson and the second for Hendry.

On Sunday, Carolina won its fourth consecutive ACC title, with Hendry the starter in goal for each of those championships. This year, as a senior, she made nine saves in a quarterfinals shutout against Boston College on Nov. 5 then had eight saves in an overtime win over Syracuse in the semifinals on Nov. 6. She made four saves in the championship game against Louisville to earn All-ACC Tournament honors.

Hendry finished the fall season leading the conference in goals against average (1.28), saves (51), and shutouts per game (.182).

Matson was named ACC Tournament MVP after scoring four goals with one assist in the three games. She scored once in both the quarterfinals and in the semifinals. In the championship, Matson had UNC's first goal of the game to close the scoring gap to 2-1. Then, in the final two minutes of the game, Matson scored for a second time to add to UNC's lead, making the final score 4-2.

Matson finished the fall season leading the ACC in all offensive categories.

The ACC title, the 23^rd in program history, wrapped up the fall for the Tar Heels. They'll play again in the spring, with the NCAA Tournament scheduled for May.
