CARY, N.C. – Despite two second half goals, North Carolina (11-1-0) fell 3-2 in the ACC Championship Final to top-seeded Florida State (11-0-0) on Sunday afternoon.
North Carolina surrendered its fourth goal of the season just two minutes into the contest when Florida State finished a corner kick with a header into the right side of the net past Claudia Dickey.
Just four minutes later, Florida State added a second goal with a strike from Clara Robbins outside of the box that ricocheted off of the right post and in. Coming into Sunday's match, North Carolina had not given up multiple goals in a single match since Nov. 29, 2019 against University of Southern California in the NCAA Tournament.
North Carolina had its first opportunity in the 13th minute when Isabel Cox headed the ball just over the post for a chance to cut the lead in half.
It had been 24 games since North Carolina trailed at the half- a situation the Tar Heels found themselves in on Sunday. At the break, North Carolina trailed 2-0, but claimed four shots, with two on target.
The Seminoles pushed its lead to 3-0 two minutes into the second half with a right-footed goal. The three goals in the first 50 minutes of the contest equaled the total number of goals UNC gave up in the previous 11 games.
Rachel Jones took advantage of a Florida State handball in the box and struck the penalty kick into the left side of the net for UNC's first goal of the afternoon in the 59th minute. It was Jones' fifth of the season, which second on the team.
The Tar Heels did not go away without a fight as Brianna Pinto netted her team-high sixth goal in the 89th minute to pull Carolina within one, but it was not enough, as the Tar Heels' comeback fell just short.
Claudia Dickey, Brianna Pinto, and Emily Fox were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts in the Tar Heels' three tournament contests.
North Carolina wrapped up the fall season at 11-1-0 and ACC Regular Season Co-Champions for the 24th time in program history.
