CHAPEL HILL—Fourth-ranked North Carolina scored two second-half goals and shutout Duke, 2-0, on Friday night at Dorrance Field.
Giovanni Montesdeoca and Taff Wadda both scored goals after halftime as Carolina blanked the Blue Devils by a 2-0 score for a second time this season. UNC started the season a month ago with a 2-0 win at Duke.
Ten minutes into the second half, Lucas del Rosario created the opportunity for the first goal, a header by Montesdeoca that proved to be the game-winner at the 55:01 mark. Del Rosario dribbled down the right side of the Blue Devil half of the field, juked a defender and sent a cross from 30 yards away perfectly so Montesdeoca could head it into the left side of the goal from point-blank range.
Wadda added an insurance goal at the 82:39 mark, scoring on a pretty give-and-go play with freshman Akeim Clarke inside the box on the left side of the goal.
The Tar Heels (3-1-2, 3-1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) finished their Fall regular season with the second seed in the ACC South Region. Carolina will host Notre Dame at 2 p.m. on Sunday Nov. 15 in an ACC Tournament quarterfinal.
UNC has won seven of the last eight meetings with Duke and is 14-2-2 in the last 18 meetings in the series.
Carolina outshot the Blue Devils, 12-8, and led in shots on goal, 4-2.
Alec Smir (3-1-2) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Tar Heels and made two saves for his fourth shutout in six games this Fall.
