CHAPEL HILL - The second day of the Janis Hape Dowd Invitational saw North Carolina break a school record in the 200 medley relay to highlight an outstanding day for the host Tar Heels from Koury Natatorium.
Carolina's 200-yard medley relay team shattered the program record and the Koury Natatorium mark with a time of 1:24.26. The team of Tyler Hill, Valdas Abaliksta, Boyd Poelke and Jack Messenger not only set the UNC record but the time was only .16 seconds off an NCAA "A" qualifying cut.Â
"It ignites the team," said Carolina head coach Mark Gangloff after the meet about breaking the long-standing school record. "I think that showed as the subsequent events came after that the rest of the team responded when they saw the record come up.
Gangloff is happy with how his team has performed after two days facing really good competition.Â
"People are making adjustments and improving. When we are giving them feedback after a race, when they come back at night they're getting better. This continual growth is good for our team in the middle of the season because that will translate later on at ACC's and NCAA's to really great performances."
Abaliksta touched first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 52.56. Teammates Jacob Rauch and Kendall Ewing placed third and fifth, respectively, with times of 53.48 and 54.09 in the event.Â
The women's 200-yard medley relay squad finished second in the opening event of the night. Grace Countie, Allie Reiter, Sophie Lindner and Heidi Lowe finished in a time of 1:37.69.
Amy Dragelin had a strong swim in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing second with a time of 1:47.48. On the men's side in the same event, Tomas Sungalia and Dimitrios Dimitriou were third and fourth at 1:34.70 and 1:35.92, respectively.
Lindner placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (52.56), while Patrick Hussey finished fourth as well in the 400-yard Individual Medley (3:50.56).
The men's 800-yard freestyle relay placed second with a time of 6:28.45.
The final day of the three-day event begins with prelims on Saturday at 10 a.m., while finals are set for 6 p.m.
