CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina Tar Heels hosted Duke, NC State and Virginia Tech in the third session of the Janis Hape Dowd Invitational Saturday night at Koury Natatorium.
Saturday's events included the 1650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle relay.
"I am really happy with the way that our meet went. I think that we finished this meet strong tonight, with over 60 best times throughout our program. To come into a meet like that and have between 30-40 percent best times is really what you are looking for as a coach," said Carolina head coach Mark Gangloff.
The Tar Heel women had multiple outstanding performances, beginning with a third-place finish and personal best from Sophie Lindner in the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.85). In the 100-yard freestyle, Heidi Lowe, Brieanna Romney, and Grace Countie finished fourth, fifth and sixth, a solid event for Carolina.
To wrap up the individual events, Addison Smith placed fifth in the 200-yard butterfly with a personal best of 1:59.27.
The Tar Heel women ended the night on a high note, finishing second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a team of Lindner, Countie, Lowe and Romney.
The Carolina men came ready to compete, as well. Chris Thames and Alex Mays tag-teamed to place third and fifth in the 200-yard backstroke, and Tyler Hill (42.78) and Tomas Sungaila (43.59) finished second and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle, both setting new personal bests.
In a significant victory for the Tar Heels, Valdas Abaliksta placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke, winning the event by more than a second and a half.
In the last event of the night, the relay team of Sungaila, Messenger, Koenigsperger and Hill gave an all-out effort in the 400-yard freestyle, finishing second.
