ACC Championships: One Week Down, One to Go
February 24, 2020 | Swimming & Diving
It has been two days since the Tar Heel women and divers finished week one of the ACC Championships, and it is only two days until the men start week two. The women finished fourth in the conference, and the divers set the men up to start their week of swimming in third place.
Â
"I'm proud of our team and the way they were able to compete," said head coach, Mark Gangloff. "Swimming and diving at a meet as long as the ACCs is tough. There are ups and downs throughout the meet, and everyone must keep pushing at every session and every event until the meet is over. The Tar Heels stayed tough and took a big step forward as a program."
Â
Last year, North Carolina placed seventh in the conference with 700.5 points. This year, Gangloff's first at UNC, they landed their fourth-place finish with 839 points.
Â
Chapel Hill's head diving coach, Yaidel Gamboa, coached with Gangloff at Missouri before the two moved to Carolina at the start of the 2019-2020 season. Gamboa has also seen success with the team's divers, as evidenced by the favorable standing of the men's team after the diving competition.
Â
"Coming here and being so competitive at the highest level is not an easy task," said Gamboa. "The future looks bright! Everyone in the team scored points and contributed to the overall result. All in all, I am very pleased with the overall outcome at the ACC Championship."Â
Â
The team will regroup for the second week of ACC Championships at Greensboro Aquatic Center from Wednesday, February 26 through Saturday, February 29. Admission will be free, and various parking options will be available.
Â
Keep up with the competition through the team's Twitter and Instagram. Information on live stats and live stream will be posted on Twitter when available.
