Sanford Seals 6-1 Win Over #13 Virginia On Alumni Day

CHAPEL HILL - On a day when North Carolina welcomed its former players back to campus for Alumni Day, Alle Sanford won the clinching match in both singles and doubles to help send No. 1 UNC to a 6-1 victory over No. 13 Virginia on a chilly afternoon at the outdoor courts at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The doubles point came down to court two after Carolina (15-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) won on court one and Virginia (8-4, 2-2 ACC) did the same on court three.
UNC's Sanford and Makenna Jones trailed 4-3 in their match on court two, but ultimately held serve, got a break and then held again to grab a 6-4 win and a 1-0 lead.
No. 6 Sara Daavettila was first off in singles with a 6-2, 6-3, win over No. 35 Rosie Johanson on court two.
The Cavaliers (cut their deficit in half with a win on court one, to make it 2-1, but UNC quickly pounced to victory after No. 4 Cameron Morra disposed of No. 89 Amber O'Dell on court three and No. 39 Sanford did the same on court five over Vivian Glozman to seal the win.
Anika Yarlagadda and No. 43 Makenna Jones both won in three sets to round out the 6-1 victory for the Tar Heels.
Among the alumni back in town where Virginia head coach Sara (Anundsen) O'Leary and assistant coach Gina Suarez-Malaguti. O'Leary and Jenna Long were the 2007 NCAA Doubles Champions, while Suarez-Malaguti was the 2013 ACC Player of the Year.
