Carolina Takes Out NC State At ITA Indoors

CHICAGO - No. 2 North Carolina received singles wins from its top three courts to earn a 4-1 victory over No. 8 NC State in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Saturday afternoon from XS Tennis Village.

The Tar Heels improved to 8-0 on the season, while the seventh seeded Wolfpack drop to 10-2.

UNC will take on No. 5 Duke on Sunday in the semifinals at 1p.m. ET. The Tar Heels have beaten the Blue Devils each of the last two years in the semifinals of this event. Last year, it was a 4-0 score line out in Seattle, and in 2018 it was a 4-1 win in Madison, Wisconsin.

Carolina's doubles teams put in another impressive shift to take the early 1-0 lead over the Wolfpack, who entered the day having not surrendered the doubles point in its first 11 matches of 2020. On Saturday, the red-hot doubles team of sophomore Cameron Morra and freshman Elizabeth Scotty posted their third-straight shutout with the 6-0 blanking of Lexi Keberle and Liz Norman on court three.

The opening point was secured minutes later on court one. Carolina's sixth ranked duo of Sara Daavettila and Alexa Graham broke serve on Anna Rogers and Alana Smith to start the match and never looked back in knocking off the top ranked doubles team in the land by a 6-1 margin.

No. 9 Cameron Morra was first to post a singles win on Saturday, defeating No. 30 Adriana Reami, 6-2, 6-2.

No. 4 Sara Daavettila (UNC) knocked off No. 43 Anna Rogers for the second time this season. Today, she trailed early before rallying for the first set win and then cruised in the second set for the 7-5, 6-1 victory.

No. 7 Alexa Graham closed the match out on court one in a three-set battle, topping No. 20 Alana Smith, 6-0, 1-6, 6-3.

Carolina and NC State will meet again on Friday, April 10 in Chapel Hill for a 3 p.m. start that will serve as UNC's Senior Day.
