Tar Heels in Sixth After Opening Round of Darius Rucker Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The North Carolina women's golf team is in sixth place after shooting a team score of 12-over-par 294 Friday to begin the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C. The Tar Heels were led by Mariana Ocano and Jennifer Zhou, who are tied for third individually.
Senior Mariana Ocano paved the way for the Tar Heels, finishing at even-par 71. Ocano started off strong on the front nine, finishing one under par with eight pars and a birdie on eight and held steady through the remainder of the round.
Sophomore Jennifer Zhou shares third place with Ocano. Zhou made two early birdies then finished with 10-consecutive pars for an even 71 finish on day one.
Freshman Kayla Smith had one of the day's highlights when she shot an eagle on the par-four, 317-yard fifth hole. Smith shot one of the two eagles during the opening round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. She finished her first round strong with a birdie on the 18th hole to post an opening round, four-over-par 75.
Freshman Krista Junkkari shot an opening round of eight-over-par 79. Junkkari fired back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth then ended the day with four straight pars.
Rounding out the Tar Heels, senior Brynn Walker made a birdie on the 520-yard, par-five sixth hole to bounce back from a tough start on the front nine. She finished her first round with a 9-over-par 80 on the day.
Sophomore Nicole Lu, competing as an individual, shot 77, including two birdies and nine pars.
After the first day at Long Cove Course, Wake Forest is leading the tournament with a first round three-over-par 287.
The Darius Rucker Intercollegiate will continue with the second round beginning at 9:20 a.m. from the first hole at Long Cove on Saturday. The Tar Heels are paired with No. 1 Texas and No. 19 Baylor who are both tied for third after day one.
